Pharmacognosy was included as a separate subject to the curriculum of Lviv University in 1855 and was taught at the department of Medicine and Surgery. In 1897 the department of Pharmacology was founded in Lviv University. Professor T.V. Vilchynsky was invited to teach the course of morphology and systematization of plants for students of Pharmacy unit (1920-1923). He was a lecturer of the course of pharmacognosy and botany at the department of Pharmacology, headed by a professor V. Koskovsky.

In 1940 from the Medical department of Lviv University was separated the institute and faculty of Pharmacy and the department of Pharmacognosy headed by a professor T. Vilchynsky.

In the post-war period, the department, supervised by a professor T. Vilchynsky, alongside with the organization of educational process and scientific research, was engaged in the training of scientific and teaching staff. The major subject of scientific research comprised investigation of the morphological and histological characteristics of medicinal plants and medicinal plant materials with the purpose of their identification.

In 1929-1964, professor T. Vilchynsky gathered a unique collection of medicinal plants with the total area of 5.5 sq. ha and consisted of up to 1,500 species. The collection included rare samples of MPM species of the tropical and subtropical origin and those growing in temperate zones. A lot of colour tables were prepared to visualize the lecture material.

The unique collection of Podillyan and Carpathian flora comprised 3,500 herbaria sheets. As a member of All-Union Botanical Society, Professor T.V. Vilchynsky consulted workers of Kholodny Botanical Institute of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and botanical gardens of Ukraine concerning investigations of various plant species of Podillya, Precarpathian, Carpathian and Transcarpathian flora, and their introduction into botanical gardens.

After professor T.V. Vilchynsky retired, the department was headed by an Associate Professor I.P. Karpus (1964-1970).

In the years 1970-1995, head of the Department was a professor L.Ya. Ladna-Rogovska, who promoted investigations on the chemical composition of medicinal plant materials by the students during their laboratory and scientific – experimental work. Associate professor I.M. Bornyak was head of the department in 1995-1999. Academic activity of the department was focused on the improvement of teaching and methodical work to meet requirements of the new teaching programs with their main objective of training specialists of the new generation.

Beginning with 1998, the year when English medium students were first admitted to the University, staff of the department has been worked at the development of methodical instructions, texts of lectures and other materials, issued in English.

Associate Professor R.Y. Darmogray was appointed the head of Pharmacognosy and botany department on July 1, 1999.

In 2008, in honour of the 120th anniversary of the birth, on the house in a botanical garden, where was established the Department of Pharmacognosy, a plaque for a professor Tadeush Vilchynsky was erected.

Botanical garden was founded by a professor of Botany Tadeush Vilchynsky in 1929-1930 and incorporated to the pharmaceutical department of Medical Faculty in Lviv University. Since 1964 collection areas of medicinal plants and dendriform park were declared the objects of nature preservation.

The botanical garden currently occupies the area of 1.5 sq. ha with the educational premises for studying of botany, collections of medicinal plants, greenhouses of tropical and subtropical plants.

Botanical garden, as a structural subdivision of the Department, is the base for practical training in pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical botany and is engaged in growing and introduction of about 900 taxons of medicinal and other useful plants, preservation of 35 rare and endangered plants. The most interesting and unique is the collection of medicinal plants, structured due to the content of major biologically active substances.

Collection funds of the plants are used for teaching of Pharmacy students, scientific research on detection of biologically active substances, conducted by the department staff, and search for new perspective plant species for application in medical practice.

Major objectives of the Botanical garden activity are preservation, investigation, reproduction of the medicinal plant resources in the conditions of cultivation of the regional and world flora and effective employment of the skills in teaching pharmacognosy and botany.

Pharmacy students are educated in nature protection, rational uses of medicinal plant resources and agriculture of medicinal plants. Main directions of scientific activities of the garden co-workers comprise plant introduction and acclimatization, investigation and protection of the unique regional phytogenofund and its rational utilization.

Experience of the Botanical garden activities and abundant species of plants cultivated in the garden facilitate the teaching and learning of reproduction, peculiarities of development and vegetation of medicinal plants of Podillya and Opillya (the western part of Ukraine).

The Botanical garden of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University takes an active part in the international collaboration on current problems of preservation, utilization and development of botanical gardens, in the exchange of scientific information and cooperative expeditions

The first electronic textbook of Pharmacognosy in English ''A Textbook of Pharmacognosy'' is prepared by the co-workers at department of Pharmacognosy and Botany Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University assist. prof. R.M. Lysyuk and prof., DSci. (Pharm) V.O. Antonyuk, in accordance with the typical program of the subject "Pharmacognosy" for students of higher pharmaceutical institution and Pharmacy faculties at higher educational institutions of III-IV levels of accreditation (Kyiv, 2011) for English medium students of Pharmacy faculty (specialty 8.110201 - "Pharmacy").

Electronic textbook is developed on the basis of the program "Microsoft Office Publisher 2007" with the possibility of on – line (www.pharmacognosy.org.ua) and off - line access. Possibility for variation of familiarization sequence with the content of a hypertext, as opposed to the linear text, is reached by division of information on segments (themes) and the establishment of links between them, allowing the user to move from the current studied theme to one of several related themes.

By the coworkers of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Botany at Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University was published the first in Ukraine ''A Laboratory Manual of Pharmacognosy'' for students of English medium (recommended by the Ministry of Education and Sciences, Youth and Sports of Ukraine as a manual, letter № 1/11-496 from 16.01. 2012), prepared by native authors and complied in accordance with the curriculum based on the principles of ECTS.

Definitions of major pharmacognostic terms concern kinds of medicinal plant materials (MPM), methods of analysis, quality control and standardization of phytopharmaceuticals. The current techniques for analysis of herbal drugs in accordance with the European Pharmacopoeia are given within the correspondent chapters. Special chapters are dedicated to batch quality analysis, sampling, macroscopic and microscopic, microchemical analyses of plant materials, analysis of herbal collections (Species) and powdered materials; also Bibliography in Pharmacy and Pharmacognosy, the journals on Pharmacognosy, Pharmacological classification of medicinal plants.

Each chapter is provided by information for better preparation of students for practical training: actuality; learning objectives; a list of relevant literature; test and program questions; examples of tests; items for homework; the detailed characteristics of the objects of analysis (plant image, MPM definition, distribution, morphological and microscopic characters, constituents, pharmacological effects, medicinal application); comparative morphological characteristics of possible adulterants; methods of fulfillment of practical tasks.

For classes of biologically active natural compounds are given classification, physical and chemical properties, methods of extraction from MPM, detection, chromatographic methods of analysis, quantitative assays, major activities. They comprise polysaccharides and glycosides, fixed oils, vitamins, simple phenols and their derivatives, coumarins and chromones, flavonoids, tannins, anthraquinones, lignans, xanthones, iridoids, volatile oils (monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, aromatic compounds), triterpenoids and saponins, steroids, cardiac glycosides, alkaloids.
